How have the ways of working today changed?

The company becomes a platform for relationships, internal or between internal and external parties. It outsources more and more activities, including strategic or core activities. The company’s own production is sometimes outsourced to external service providers. Value is created both inside and outside the organization. The company is an ecosystem with multiple stakeholders. These new paradigms have direct consequences for the workplace and even for the organization of our cities.

So there is a breakdown of the workspace?

The period of lockdown that we experienced in 2020 accelerated a transformation that was already underway. We are experiencing a rapid and unprecedented change in our lifestyles and our relationship to work, with consequences for the organization of our cities as territories adapt to changing uses. Our future urban spaces will be plural. Working from home, flex-office and co-living are all practices that force us to reinvent the traditional work environment.

“Real estate must support our lifestyles. And yet our ways of living and working are changing very quickly today.”

What is changing in the design process of an office building today?

More than just designing spaces, we are responding to new ways of working. Today’s office buildings must offer employees spaces that promote both productivity and well-being, because we have understood and proven that one promotes the other. We must therefore understand the needs of users, adapt our responses, and anticipate that spaces can have multiple lives, multiple uses. Geographically, we envision mixed-use neighborhoods. In the future, the same neighborhood will be home to families, employees, visitors, etc.

And how to address environmental issues at the same time?

To respond to the climate crisis, the first priority for office buildings is to implement clean energy generation solutions. And for me, the second priority is to develop cooling islands in new buildings. To sustainably support changes in our lifestyles, we are also integrating a form of reversibility into the service sector.
